Response to: Ali: The Guide – Hasan Sunni Hadith

The following is a response to SlaveOfAhlubait’s article entitled: “Ali: The Guide – Hasan Sunni Hadith”, which can be found here.

SoA quotes the narration:

ibn abbass says that when the verse was revealed; prophet placed his hand on chest of ali asws; and then said i am the warner and for every nation is a guide; and then he nodded his hand on ali; and said “o ali! you are the hadi, and you will guide the guided ones after me

SoA then provides the opinion of Ibn Hajar, who said that the narration is Hasan.

It is important for those who have access to Fath Al-Bari to return to the statements of Ibn Hajar who clearly expresses doubt regarding the authenticity of the hadith, even after stating that the hadith is Hasan.

More importantly, there are two flaws in the chain. The first problem is that Mu’ath bin Muslim Al-Ansari is an anonymous narrator. See Mizan Al-I’itidal by Al-Thahabi 6/453.

The second is that Al-Hassan bin Al-Husain Al-Ansari has been heavily criticized. Abu Hatim said that he wasn’t truthful. Ibn Adi said that his narrations don’t look like the narrations of trustworthy narrators. Ibn Hibban said he attributes fake narrations to trustworthy narrators. See Mizan Al-I’itidal 2/230.

SoA then points to a group of weak narrations, however, SoA does not even bother to quote them since their weakness is clear. However, SoA chooses to quote another narration from Musnad Ahmad:

plus, keep in mind that there is a similar narration where we find that holy prophet said that a man from bani hashim will be the guide
and that hadeeth is sahih
let me share that with you

SoA failed to provide the translation, so we shall be providing it instead.

The Messenger of Allah (salalahu alaihi wa salam) said, “The cautioner and the guide is a man from Bani Hashim.”

Notice how this narration is different from the previous narration in which the Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa salam) says that the cautioner or warner is himself and that the guide is Ali, while this narration says that both the cautioner and the guide are the same person.

As we can tell from the context of the verses, the cautioner is the Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa salam) and not Ali, which means that he is both the warner and the guide that are mentioned in the verse.

Perhaps the greatest irony in the above is that SoA provide a narration assuming that it is evidence for them, when in reality it is evidence against them.

You will often see Imami Rafidhah do this.

  1. The Prophet (s) said, “I am the warner, and the guide after me is Ali (a).” [Musnad Ahmad, 1/151; Al-Tirmidhi, 2/135; Al-Khasa’is of Al-Nisa’I, 20; Kenz Al-Oman, 1/247; Ibn Al-Maghazeli, 222.

    • Musnad Ahmad? Did you know that in Musnad Ahmad it says: “The warner and the guide is a man from Banu Hashim”? The narration doesn’t mention `Ali. There is no mention of the above text in Musnad Ahmad (And it’s weak either way).

Secondly, you wrote Khasa’is of al-Nasa’ee and I never found it there.

Thirdly, you wrote “Kenz Al-Oman” It’s called Kanz-ul-`Ummal, which means you never even opened this book since you don’t know its title, which means you copied it from somewhere else. FYI, this book has no chains so everything in it is not acceptable.

Fourthly, ibn al-Maghazili’s Manaqib contains the worst quality of Hadith, the author collected everything he could get his hands on without verifying its authenticity. I also couldn’t find this narration in the page you specified.

These sources aside, this narration is found elsewhere and its chain is weak.
