Response to: The Banu Umayah were Cursed and Hated by the Holy Prophet (s)

The following is a response to ShiaPen’s article entitled: The Banu Umayah were Cursed and Hated by the Holy Prophet (s), which can be found here.

In this article, ShiaPen quotes a few narrations that suggest the bad treatment of certain members of Bani Umayyah, like Marwan bin Al-Hakam and other unnamed individuals from the tribe, towards members of Ahlulbayt like Al-Hasan and Al-Hussain.

The twelvershia.net team does not deny that there were evil people within Bani Umayyah. Like all tribes and families, Bani Umayyah consisted of good and evil people. The same can be said for Bani Hashim, Bani Taym, and Bani Adi. However, we disagree with ShiaPen in their claim that the Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa salam) cursed the entire tribe of Bani Ummayah.

The narration included by ShiaPen states:

Abu Dhar (ra) said: ‘The people that Allah’s Apostle hated the most were the Banu Umaya, Thaqif and Banu Hanifa’
This has been recorded by Abu Ya’ala al-Moseli, Ahmand ibn Hanbal, and Hakem, and he (Hakim) termed it as Sahih according to the two Sheikhs standards.

Firstly, the companion narrating the hadith is Abi Barza and not Abi Dhar.

Secondly, Al-Hakim is incorrect in saying that this narration is upon the conditions of the two shaikhs, since Abu Hamza, the neighbour of Shu’ba, does not narrate in Saheeh Al-Bukhari. Furthermore, he only has one narration in Saheeh Muslim, which is a report from Anas, not the Prophet (salalahu alaihi wa salam).

Finally, Abu Hamza, the neighbour of Shu’ba, did not receive any praise or any statements that implied his reliability in hadith from the classical hadith scholars.

In conclusion, the Hadith is weak. As for bani Umayyah, some of them were greatly praised such as `Uthman ibn `Affan and many gave great services to Islam like `Amro ibn Sa`eed ibn al-`Aas, Yazid bin abi Suffiyan and `Umar ibn `Abdul-`Aziz.
